Fort Lauderdale Snapper Spawn

These girls caught a nice mangrove snapper in Ft Lauderdale

Snappers are snapping fishing the reefs of Ft Lauderdale.  June is an excellent month for snapper fishing in Ft Lauderdale.  This week, we’re coming up onto the full moon.  Every year, the few nights surrounding the June full moon is the snapper spawn.  This is when snappers congregate and undergo their spawning habits.  When this is going on, the bite is fierce.  The fish throw caution to the wind and bite everything you throw at them.

Mutton snappers are the main spawning snapper of June.  The gather in 40-100ft of water, in the sandy areas outside and inside the reef.  These few nights, the mutton snappers bite better than the entire rest of the year.  Mainly they will weigh 4-10 pounds, but a few will get into the teens and could even reach 20.  Ballyhoo plugs, whole sardines, cigar minnows, and strip baits work very well for muttons.  Live pinfish, although a favorite of mine for fishing the keys, doesn’t work as well as other baits for Ft Lauderdale muttons.

Mangrove snappers also bite exceptionally well in June during the mutton spawn.  The full moon in general is a good time for mangroves, but there must be something in water in June because the snapper go crazy!  3-5 pound mangroves have been biting during the afternoon trips and on the night trips the past few days.  We should have some excellent snapper fishing on our night anchor trips for the next week during the June full moon.  Good luck fishing everyone, I’ll sea ya on the water.

Another Great Deep Sea Fishing Charter

Warsaw grouper

Nice warsaw grouper caught deep sea fishing in Ft Lauderdale.

Today was another great deep sea fishing day when we caught an over 60 pound warsaw grouper.  What a beast, this fish was a monster.  We thought we had on a huge amberjack or perhaps a shark, this thing was fighting so hard.  When we started to get him near the surface, the fighting started to lessen and the line started planning upwards.  We knew it was a big grouper.  When the fish came up, he was fully bloated with all the gas from rising so quickly.  The same thing would happen to a diver if he rose from such a depth rapidly without giving his body time to expel all that extra volume of gasses.  Groupers seem to be more prone to the “bends” than other fish we catch from that depth.  Amberjacks for instance, can fight the entire way up to the top without getting a buildup of gasses.

This is a great season for groupers, and a great year for them as well.  We’re catching good numbers of black, gag, red and warsaw groupers this year.  This week alone, we’ve caught 3 monster warsaw groupers, 2 big blacks, 2 gag groupers and I don’t know how many red groupers (on our daytime drift and night anchor fishing trips).  Our drift fishing trips are also crushing the yellowtail snappers out there lately.  Fort Lauderdale bottom fishing is great with a lot of variety on grouper, snappers, a few cobia and sharks of all species. A lot of good bottom fishing action these days.  Good luck fishing everyone, I’ll sea ya on the water!

Bull dolphin just caught sportfishing- beautiful greens and yellows

Nice bull dolphin caught sportfishing in Ft Lauderdale aboard the Big Game

What great fishing we’re having in Fort Lauderdale this week.  Lots of action on the reefs, lots of big fish around the wrecks, lots of variety offshore.  Our sportfishing charter today had a great day.  They went trolling for the first part of the trip and caught a really nice mahi-mahi dolphin fish.  When they got to their destination, a shipwreck in 250ft of water just off north Miami Beach, they did some deep dropping and caught this monster warsaw grouper.  We also caught some other bonitos and kingfish when trolling as well as a nice amberjack which I don’t have a photo of.  The fishing in Fort Lauderdale is great this week.  A few sailfish are around, wrecks are holding all kinds of cool fish, sharks are still making their migration down our coast and there are some mahi-mahi, tuna and wahoo biting on the troll.  It’s a great time of year for deep sea fishing in South Florida. Good luck out there, I’ll sea ya on the water.
