Offshore Dolphin Fishing Getting Hot in Fort Lauderdale

Lots of dolphin and wahoo

All day offshore sportfishing trip aboard the Big Game

The offshore fishing in Fort Lauderdale is lighting up.  We’re finding dolphin 5-8 miles offshore along the seaweed beds that are forming in that area.  The seaweed beds are large, some as large as an acre.  Dolphin are schooling up underneath these beds and trolling for them has been awesome.  Some good sized wahoo are also being caught around these giant seaweed canopys.  We’re catching the wahoo on the deep planer baits, or by slow trolling live baits from a downrigger.  Our daily all day fishing trip and the private full day sportfishing charter are the trips which are capable of going offshore for dolphin.  You just can’t go the distance offshore on a half day trip.

Bonitos caught in Ft Lauderdale

The half day trips are catching more than their fair share though.  Bonitos and kingfish are chewing!  Trolling or drift fishing on the reef is almost non-stop action these days.  The massive bonito run is going on right now.  On our daily drift fishing trips, a school of bonitos will come through and we’ll have on 20 fish simultaneously. Now that is excitement!  Kingfish are also biting good, especially in the afternoons.  The afternoon bite on kings has been excellent as the small afternoon showers come through.  When the barometer lowers a few millibars, the kingfish bite gets going.  A few blackfin tuna are also being caught on the drift and trolling the reef.  Summertime blackfin tuna get up to 35 pounds and are a hellatious fighter.

Big cobia

Big cobia caught night anchor fishing on Catch My Drift

Night fishing is excellent in July and August.  Yellowtail snappers are biting good on the night anchor trips.  We are chumming with fresh ground bonito chum and the yellowtails are coming out of the woodwork for this stuff.  Some the ‘tails have been bigger than the muttons lately, some pushing 5 pounds.  There have been some humongous ‘tails caught the past week.  Mangrove snappers are also biting good, some small some big.  A couple of 10-20 pound cobia have been caught the past couple nights and a few on the day trips.  They are a great eating fish and exciting to catch.

This is a very good season for fishing.  The action is good, inshore and offshore.  There’s a great variety out there and some very nice fish to be caught.  Good luck to everyone fishing with us this week.  Sea ya on the water.
